Crude oil, or petroleum that has been extracted straight from the earth, is an incredibly diverse commodity in terms of both its usage and makeup. Crude oil is created from the preserved remains of ancient zooplankton and algae that have accumulated in enormous amounts on the bottom of the sea (or lake) due to anoxic conditions. Due to the compression and heating of prehistoric organic materials over the course of geological time, it was developed over millions of years from the remains of microscopic aquatic plants and animals that formerly inhabited ancient oceans. The youngest oil-bearing rocks are only a million years old, while the oldest stretch back more than 600 million years.

All crude oils are composed mostly of various types of hydrocarbons, which are molecules consisting of hydrogen and carbon atoms but have different structures. Hydrocarbon chains of various lengths make up the chemical structure of petroleum.
